The meaning of the song “the word
nigger__conservatives is where it comes from” is literal. It’s a
recounting of the history of the coming of the black man to america.
The term nigger
is the slurring of the word negro, which is a designation
of a classification of human being. The slave traders who went to
africa to buy the slaves used the word to describe their cargo.
Later, after the slaves went to the auction block the term was used
to describe what was being sold. Finally, after the slaves were
purchased and taken to the plantations to labor in the fields, the
overseers used the term to describe what they were overseeing.
In every step along
the way it is a business process. Hard-eyed, conservative business
types saw and reaped profits from the slave trade. The cotton and
rice and tobacco plantation owners used slave labor to make their
businesses run effectively.
In a very real sense
slavery was a conservative invention, as were the jim crow
laws, and the concept of separate but equal. It
is no overstatement to say that the word nigger is a
conservative invention.
Finally, dylan
thompson brought us this song months before any of the current
uproar involving the rutgers basketball team. Frankly, his treatment
of the subject of race in america lands far more closely to the
truth than don imus and his sledge-hammer. Dylan thompson uses
a very sharp arrow. |
